You can get smoother browser games on a budget phone by freeing up memory, keeping the phone cool and loading games on Wi-Fi when you can. None of these fixes costs anything, and most take less than a minute.

Instant games are a good fit for cheaper phones because there's nothing to install. But your browser still has to load and run the game, so it helps to give it some room.

If the game is laggy

Start with these in order. The first few usually make the biggest difference.

  1. Close other apps. Apps left open can use memory your browser needs. Social media and video apps are worth closing first.

  2. Close spare browser tabs. Each open tab can use memory too, so keep the game in a tab of its own where possible.

  3. Restart your phone. This clears out temporary clutter, and it's especially useful if the phone hasn't been restarted in weeks.

  4. Update your browser. Newer versions often include speed and compatibility fixes.

  5. Free up some storage. A nearly full phone tends to slow down. Delete old videos or apps you no longer use.

  6. Let a hot phone cool down. Phones often slow themselves when they overheat. Take it off the charger, remove a thick case and rest it for a few minutes.

Check your battery settings

Battery saver modes limit background activity and can cause delays in some apps and network connections, so a game may feel slower while one is on. If you have enough charge, try turning it off while you play. If you need to save power, lowering your screen brightness is a useful alternative.

If you're on limited data

A game's biggest data cost often comes when it first loads, so a little planning goes a long way.

  • Load games on Wi-Fi first. Your browser may keep some files, which can mean less to fetch next time.

  • Don't clear your browser's cache without a reason. Clearing it means those files have to be fetched again. Save this step for when a game won't load properly.

  • Stick to a few favorites. A game you've already loaded will often use less data than a new one.

  • Measure it yourself. On most phones, the settings menu shows data use by app. Check your browser's number, play for 10 minutes, then check it again.

  • Stop background data use. Automatic app updates and video backups can use up your allowance while you play. Set them to run on Wi-Fi only.

If your connection is unstable

A weak signal affects games in different ways.

  • Solo games mostly need a connection to load, though this varies by game. Try these first if your signal comes and goes.

  • Versus modes rely on an active connection, so a drop can cost you a match. Save them for when your signal is strong.

  • Moving around can make your signal change. If you're on a train or bus, choose something you won't mind restarting.

Choose games that suit your phone

Some games are more forgiving on slower phones.

Still having trouble?

If a game keeps stuttering after all of this, try another browser, since performance can vary between them. If one game still won't work, let us know which phone and browser you're using so we can look into it.
